The Last Conquistador is an entertaining and fast read that took me to places I didn't expect. Beautifully written with strong characters, I recommend this book for anyoe who loves gritty, dark fiction.
I loved the 2 very different, yet interweaving story lines. It has great character development, that I found it easy to relate to. I couldn't put it down, and when it was over I wanted more!
Kevin Singer's first novel is an engaging read, with a time-jumping plot that moves along at a good pace. The wide cast of characters are believable and well portrayed; particularly like the historical storyline(s).
disjointed...left so much unexplained. Flashbacks were fine but it seemed the first part went on and on and then there was a rush to finish with lots just left dangling...
The wretched mental, emotional and physical battle Randy embarks on to salvage his life's last remaining hope as a GI stationed in modern day Germany and Rodrigo's promising adventures of physical survival and true love as a stranded Spanish conquistador are beautifully tied together through terror, humor and personality. The author left me spooked of the demons that hold us all in our own personal binds of bondage, yet also comforted in how these binds connect all of humanity. Excellent read for fiction lovers!!! Non-fiction buffs can find good references to historical times and places as well as appreciate the wit and charm of the colorful characters. )
The Last Conquistador is a great story that always kept my interest. The transitions between the two characters, living in totally different time periods, and their connections are done perfectly. I really enjoyed the military and historical references which I feel made it more authentic. The story is definitely a bit darker (which I liked) and left me with a bittersweet feeling for the characters' lives.
I don't normally read fiction. So needless to say, a supernatural- love story was not at the top of my reading list. However, when my friend recommended this book, I was mesmerize by the cover and wanted to know more about the story and what was behind those eyes. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. I got so caught up with both stories that I couldn't wait to get to the end. I loved the current day story because I felt like I could hear Randy express himself. The alternate chapters telling Rodrigo's story felt like Historic Spanish Mythology. What I found interesting was how passionate both these men were, it wasn't just a chase but a determined path for love and honor. The Last Conquistador embraces the complications of love today while breaking free of the past. What a great ride!
