I've been a faithful Anna Strong fan since the first book, which by far, was the best of the series.Yet, as I have read about 60 pages into this latest entry into the Anna Strong series, I really haven't found anything new or interesting. Yes, Culebra's story is interesting, but it's not original.
Don't get me wrong, Anna is a great character, and the plot line for this series suffices, but Stein's last few entries have been lacking IMO. Too many vampires and too many supernatural creatures lend to a feeling of overkill as Stein has travelled down the very worn path of "a great supernatural underworld that humans know nothing about".
Where's the singular identity? Where's the novelty? Where's the rarity of the vampire in this story? There's no uniqueness. It seems almost every vampire writer has an entire world of vampires to include in their stories, and then comes the many other supernatural sub-cultures to expand the story-line.
Booooooooooooooring. It's been done before, a thousand times over.
I mean, I like the series, but it could be so much better. If Stein could get back to the roots of her first book of the series, it would be so much better IMO.
If you're a fan of the first book, you're probably hooked like I am, but I just had to play some devil's advocate and add some realistic critique as well.

Haunted Anna Strong Jeanne C Stein 9781937007768 Books Reviews
Usually I don't read vampire stories. This was a very enjoyable book. Now I'll ave to go back and start other series. Well written.
This book, like all of Jeanne C. Stein, deserves a 5 star rating. Her gift of writing such wonderful fantasy books is such that you can picture yourself as the main character in each one. That truthfully, I would like to be Anna Strong for a lot of reasons the main one is that while a strong individual, she still has love and compassion and only seeks to protect those that cannot protect themselves. I would recommend this book to everyone that enjoys vampire/shape shifting fantasies. All of the books in this series is a must read.
One of the best series out there! Every Anna Strong book keeps me non-stop reading. I do not want this series to end! Please keep this series going Ms. Stein. This series has the strength to continue for a long time and I hope they do continue. If you like strong characters who give as good as they get, you will love this series. I have only one downfall in this book & that was the tears it caused. I am still in shock because I did not see it coming & would love that it had never happened. Buy the books! Read the books! You'll know what I'm talking about! Thank you Jeanne Stein for a great read!
I have read all the Anna Strong books but this was one I really could not put down until it was finished. THE PLUSES FOR THIS BOOK are that I was completely engrossed by the very real plot. Had tears in my eyes at several points in the book. Loved that Frey and his son were in it. I like Frey but I really like Max too (such a hunky/sexy DEA man). I couldn't believe Culebra's past! WOW never expected that! THE NEGATIVES FOR THIS BOOK and this is only because I saw things going in a completely different direction. I really thought that Max and Anna would finally work things out. That Max would apologize for not being there for Anna after she was turned and that Anna would finally tell Max how she was turned (the rape and everything else) and everything would be okay between them. Then there is the ending which I'm really torn about. It's closure yet it's also an opening. I actually cried (no hysterical sobbing just a lot of tearing up really) because the ending completely blew me away and I just never saw it coming! I'm only giving 4 stars because I'm not sure I really like the ending.
This book is called haunted for several reasons that I'm not going to go into because I don't want to be a spoiler. I read this 300 page ebook in one afternoon -- it was that good. The books in this series combine just the right amount of action, with description and love story interest to keep the reader engaged. Anna's ex, Max, is back again and being a jerk like usual. I never understood why he had such a problem with her, but at least in this book he starts coming around to recognizing she's not such a bad person. I've always wished Anna would have told him the whole story of how she became a vampire, but that would have been more for her own vidication I guess. Frey, who has always been a favorite makes a guest appearance and throws her in a tailspin concerning her heart. I think her main problem is that she keeps ending up with men who treat her like an accessory instead of like the main attraction. I always feel like the men are with her for what she can do for them whether it be political or as eye candy. Anna can do better. The ending made me sad and happy all in one. I'm also glad we got more of a back story on her friend and fellow supernatural, Culebra.
Kudos to Jeanne C. Stein for continuing this series with deeper plotting and very surprising character development. Avoiding spilling a spoiler, I will only say that it takes courage to kill off a major character and not piss off her readers.
This episode has more twists and turns than Culebra shape shifted into his snake form. Many of those twists and turns involve taking the reader into the dark past of Anna's mysterious friend, Culebra. His past has caught up with him, and after a surprisingly judgemental reaction on Anna's part, the two friends are alienated. On her way to reconcile with him, Anna finds a man wandering the desert and brings him to Culebra's and the really takes off.
Stein keeps the action flowing at a break neck pace while entangling the reader into her great plotline.
Along the way we learn a lot about Anna's struggles with with her dual nature, vampire/human. At the end, after much travail, suffering, loss and soul-searching, Anna begins to find some inner peace.
I recommend this book and series to all lovers of great action and storytelling.
Highly recommended.
