There is always a huge worry when there is a large gap between releases in a series that it just won’t be the same as it was before, even more so when that gap lasts 4 years. I can say that this had very much the same feel as the previous 3 books, which is and isn’t necessarily a good thing. It is good because all the elements that I’ve loved about this series are still there. The world is still rich in both characters and setting. We get to see plenty of it in this book and is the biggest reason for the rating, along with an interesting main story line.
It is not so good because it seems as though the characters didn’t grow or progress all that much from the previous books. There was no obvious or significant change in Alex’s powers. There is still the three-way drama with her sort of relationships with Falin and Death. The only difference at all doesn’t even take place until the end of the book and even that is apparently just a temporary fix that doesn’t actually solve anything.
On a spoiler note…
While this does resolve the main issue story line, it also doesn’t. It mostly leaves a whole lot of open ended speculation that there is more going on than what we saw here. It also felt pretty anti-climactic that the reader never learns why Glitter didn’t burn out Alex like it did every other user. You can speculate that it is because she is at least part Fae, along with the Winter Queen, but it is never actually addressed. You would think that with her ability to see through glamours, it wouldn’t have affected her the same way and that there should have been a very different affect on the Queen than there was on Alex.
I do really enjoy this series, but I would love it a whole lot more if we could get past the unnecessary relationship flip flopping and move on to something different now. Resolve it one way or another and lets explore Alex’s place within the world of Faerie as that seems to be a much more important issue.

I really like Alex Craft and her world. Death and Falin are great romantic foils. All of Alex's friends are interesting and varied. I re-read the whole series before starting this, so that it would be fresh in my mind when I started this long-awaited entry into the series. Unfortunately, the books are becoming formulaic. People start dying, some weird magic is involved, Alex puts herself in harms way to find the solution, and she comes up with some never-before-seen way of thwarting the evil. Nothing is every solved with her love life. Wash, rinse, repeat. This is a common problem with series so it's obviously a tough thing for authors to avoid. I hope that Price is able to overcome the roadblock and make the next entry more original and satisfying.
There were so many avenues to explore here. Court intrigue, the drug and the effects on humans vs. Fae, the relationship with her father and friends, etc. But it feels the same. For $8 we see Alex running around tired all the time, being propped up by a guy, and harrased by mean old women. Then of course, she is still torn between Falin and Death while not one but TWO other men want to marry her. Winter, and Shadow suitors. I'm getting weary of Alex, a strong witch and planeweaver being the constant damsel in distress who can't seem to ever do her own shopping or even laundry. I feel bad for her dog. She seems unable to care for herself, how is she managing to care for a little dog when she goes blind or passes out all the time. Oh, and is only eating when a man cooks for her or takes her to Bloom. It is a real waste of a very strong potential character. She's been reduced to a damsel who needs recusing from the mean insane fae, or the mean insane fae males.
It's been done. To death. I'm tired. About as tired as she seems to be. So now, she gets her independence but for saving the court of winter, oh just a year.
I wonder what Caleb did to get his.
But I won't continue to read. I think I can finish it a better way in my imagination rather than pay someone to write about a good strong woman who is weakening. Not fading, just weak.
As y'all know, it's been a while. As time drew near, I re-read all the previous books and was ready for February 2 to hit. Yes, the story picks up where we left off. Yes, angst and guilt seem to color all of Alex's relationships. Anyone who has any kind of personal relationship with Alex has gotten hurt and nearly all have been pulled into Fairie at one time or another (even the dog!). What I really hoped for with this book is some advancement. Do we know why Alex's father is in deep hiding? No. Do we have some progress towards a relationship? No. Has she picked a court? Not choosing is not really a choice in this case. And hey, you got something the courts want! So, are you making them come to you with their best offer? No. You know you are a planeweaver. You know that there exists one other who might give you advice. Do you seek the other planeweaver out to maybe learn something so that you aren't stumbling around blindly putting everyone you love in danger? That's a big NO.
What we've learned Everyone comes when you call them - maybe not in the way you expect, but even the King of Nightmares shows up. You now glow and surprise! you're part of the ruling class of Fairie. Alex may not want to learn from Daddy Dearest, but she doesn't take the effort to ask anyone else, not even Caleb who has been drawn into her drama. Caleb may be ticked that Holly now has been roped into the drama, but I'm pretty sure he's got a handle on "ignorance of the law does not excuse you" and would help if asked.
The writing is still solid. The story held my attention. I'm not looking for resolution, but I would sure like some momentum rather than yet another court (this time Light) out to get Alex.
